Turn a difficult slope into your best outdoor feature
Most properties in the Sea to Sky corridor have grade changes. Some are subtle. Some are significant. Either way, unmanaged slopes limit what you can do with your outdoor space — and in this climate, they can cause real problems over time if they're not properly addressed.
We've built retaining walls across the corridor for years, and the projects that age best are the ones where the wall is treated as part of the landscape design, not just a structural fix. The right material, the right drainage behind it, and the right integration with what's around it.
We work in natural stone, armour stone, and timber depending on the site, the grade, and the aesthetic. Natural stone walls blend into the landscape and improve with age. Armour stone handles significant grade changes with fewer courses. Timber suits more informal settings where a softer look fits the property.
Every wall we build includes proper drainage behind the structure — gravel backfill, filter fabric, weeping tile where the site calls for it. It's the part nobody sees, but it's what separates a wall that lasts from one that fails in five years.
What we build
Natural Stone Walls Dry-stacked or mortared, natural stone walls are the most visually integrated option for properties in the Sea to Sky. They look like they belong — because the material does.
Armour Stone Large-format stone for significant grade changes or when you need serious mass. Bold, structural, and built to handle the kind of ground movement this region sees.
Timber Walls A more approachable look for smaller grade changes or garden borders. Treated timber built and drained properly holds up well and suits properties with a more natural aesthetic.
Terraced Walls & Multi-Level Systems When the grade change is substantial, a single wall isn't always the right answer. We design terraced systems that break up elevation changes, create usable flat areas at each level, and give the yard a layered, intentional look.
Integrated Coping & Lighting Coping caps the wall cleanly and protects the structure. Low-voltage lighting along the top or face of a wall adds depth at night and makes elevation changes a feature rather than just a boundary.
Why it matters
A retaining wall that's undersized, poorly drained, or built on an inadequate base will move. In this climate — freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rain, saturated ground — the forces on a wall are significant. We spec walls for the actual conditions on site, not just what looks right in the moment.
Done well, a retaining wall increases your usable outdoor area, protects your property, and adds genuine value. It's one of the more practical investments you can make in a Sea to Sky property.
